"That's quite a story," said her mother. "It's not a story, it's true!" said Josie.
“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”
Pablo Picasso
James Hywel always 'thinks outside the book'.
His philosophy is that a book should be far more than just a story to make a child chuckle. That is only the start of the work of the book. It should not only change the life of the reader but should have more far-reaching ramifications.
That's why we're paying it forward.
James Hywel Books currently supports the children's charity When you wish upon a Star.
We donate signed copies for their various events throughout the year.
This is truly an amazing charity and we are proud to play a very small part in the incredible work they do.
We regularly donate our books to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
These books are signed by James and go into the hospital library in the hope that they bring a smile to the children during their stay.
We also donate signed books to The Cowshed at Christmas.
Albert Mouse for Schools Project
James gives his time freely to schools across the country as well as overseas.
He has asked Albert Mouse to be his Writing Ambassador and Albert's role is to inspire children to enjoy writing and work together in creating their own real 'Albert Story'.
Break the Cycle has partnered with Albert Mouse to establish Albert Mouse Esquire. AME will promote healthy relationships with friends, family and others so that children’s well-being can be positive, and it offers a strong protective factor against poor mental health.
Sometimes James is asked if he can help raise money by donating the royalties of a book to a charity or 'good cause'.
He recently agreed to donate The Horse with short legs to The Rocking Horse Project in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).
James is often asked if he can do something special for some very extraordinary children and he never hesitates to say yes.
At James Hywel Books we are always thinking of ways our books can benefit children (and adults) beyond just the pleasure of reading the book.
“Do things for people not because of who they are or what they do in return,
but because of who you are.”
Harold S. Kushner - Rabbi and author
In 2022 an amazing little girl called Daisy raised a huge sum of money for a children's charity. As a thank you, James wrote her into a story and created an entire Albert book around her. Read about Daisy in Albert learns to swim.
In 2023 James wrote The Horse with Short Legs to raise funds for the Rocking Horse Project in the Kingdom of Eswatini (Swaziland) in Southern Africa.
James donated his time and the entire royalties for this book to the charity.
This book will only be available through The Rocking Horse Project.

On behalf of all the children and their families who are going to benefit from your writing, a very big Thank You".
The first print run of 500 copies is now sold out and it raised £1,262 for The Rocking Horse Project.
A second reprint is now underway.

“We can all give of our time to help others. You just have to ask yourself one question.
How long a shadow do you want to cast?”
